Ok there is a lever on the air flaps the one that connects to the rod for the thermostat.

It fouls the inlet manifold, can I cut it off, can't remember if it connects to anything.

You already answered your question Jim. If it's hooked to the thermostat, then no, you shouldn't cut it off. Having the flaps operate correctly is important on these aircooled beasts - though I imagine that lever has been placed to the wrong side. Almost all the cooling hardware I've seen has been on the intake side of the fan shroud. And go easy on the gold paint! That will hinder the cooling process - remember "Chrome won't get you home"!

there are the normal 4 levers on the gearbox side of the shroud that are linked by the bar and held with spring clips and a retaining spring. All I wanted to do was cut off the straight part of the lever not do away with it, as I still want to use the thermostat in cooler weather to warm the engine up correctly.

having never seen a linkage point there before, and you can retain a working thermostat, then I see no issue with trimming that off, so long as the through-rod doesn't fall out!

No I will cut it just above where the lever attaches retaining the pin that holds the flap and thermostat rod

I still think the flaps are in back to front and the lever shoould pass through that slot visable at the back. The flaps are important only if you live in cold climes and need a faster warm up. most people with bugs, trikes, etc bin them to allow more air flow.

No,no.no, no :cursing:
you still have it at the aletrnator side which is actully the back of the engine, it goes at the clutch end (front) in the slots and a flat link rod connects the two from the thermostat on the right running under the fan inlet,
It well discribed in this site http://www.vw-resource.com/heat4.html#schools and scroll down to thermostats/warm up
On second thoughts.

Peter this is at the back of the engine, I have the 4 flap rods that connect to the bar
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x91/euronova/UKK469H/flappics.jpg

all 4 rods are in line on the gearbox side, this lever is on it's own and points towards the alternator side where it always has been.

Ah I believe it used to do this:
The thermostat also controls the carburetor pre-heat air through a pull-wire which loops around behind the carburetor to a flap in the air cleaner intake. With the engine cold, warm air is pulled up through the paper tube from near the cylinder head to the air cleaner and on to the carburetor.
As I have an aftermarket NIkki carb it is now redundant.

Aswatisaid, init? :clapping:
2 link across the back, one to carb and one to thermostat (or bin it like every one else) I have never run with flaps and it was never a problem when I was in the UK. sure as hell don't need them here, Phew
If you are not going to connect it to the stat and carb you might as well bin them anyway.

was connected to stat on old engine, I have checked the stat operates and it does, so I will connect the stat to the link bar at the back but have no need for the front lever, but it is there if ever I put a standard carb on in the future.
