I have a new oil temp gauge coupled to a dip stick sender but don't think it's compatable, first attempt gauge read 110 deg when switched live, no I have mover gauge it reads nil. It came with a threaded sender I have not used yet but if I do where could it go, first thought was to tap a hole in the oil drain plug and fit when I do an oil change soon, not into drilling the casing due to getting the swarf out.

You should already have a pre-drilled hole, Jim. Most guys use the oil light sender location, on the left side of the case (looking at it from the pulley end) just under the distributor. You can even T off of that to put a temp and pressure sender in.

I already have a pressure sender and the oil light plugged in there, also its pretty difficult to reach unless the rear panel is off and that's a nightmare to do. unless I can fathom out some quick release mechanism.

That position is good for a pressure guage take-off but a temperature sender should be immersed in oil - so either a dip-stick one or mounted in the cover-plate would be better.

I was wondering about where to fit an oil temp sender too. I saw this sump plug sender http://www.machine7.com/product.php?xPr ... &xSec=1171 (http://www.machine7.com/product.php?xProd=3262&xSec=1171)

They say they can supply a Sump Plate with the threaded sump plug hole, just in case your model is currently fitted with a solid plate: http://www.machine7.com/product.php?xProd=282

Anyone gone down this route?

I had a sump sender similar to that some years ago, but it wasn't that accurate at all, and took a time to show any rise/fall.

I subsequently moved to a VDO dipstick sender, and VDO guage which I always found to be reliable.

Cannot give you any part numbers at the moment as all packed up ready for the house move, but will post them as and when they turn up !

Best position I found is either an in-line unit on the out pipe if a remote cooler (the hottest point in the oil flow is just before the oil cooler) is used but if no external / full flow mods have been done then in the bottom of the crankcase where the type III dipstick fits is where I have mine even with a full flow.
