Hi,

Do anyone know anything about big boxer engines.

I have for a while ago bought myselfe a big used Scat engine. This is 2,5 liters and had before about 280 horsepowers. The compression is lowered, a milder camshaft installed and carburators will be fitted. This should give the engine about 220 horsepowers. This was almost a complete engine when i bought it, but it was missing the generator and the oil cooler. I have now bought this, but I am wondering a little bit about installation of the oil cooler. I need to install a valve with a thermostat somewhere, but how should I do this?

No, you don't. If you have all the tins in place for the motor, that's all the thermostat you need. The larger issue is where you're going to fit an oil cooler properly so that the motor can come up to temperature. A 2.5 is a pretty hefty motor, so temperature will be critical. Better too cool than too hot, though!

Hi,

I have all the tin in place, and I also use a center mounted fancase in aluminium. I want the oil to circulate as normal inside the engine, but if the oil get hot I want the thermostat to open and send the oil to the oil cooler.

Where the orange lines are what you would need to fabricate. You would also need to find a t-stat with a bypass so the oil would still flow when it was closed; keep in mind that this point will be the weak point in the oiling system since most t-stats restrict the flow of fluid. What was done on my motor (not a Scat, but owner-built not by me) was the external oil filter was retained (green & red lines), and the OEM oil cooler mounts at the back of the block were tapped for pipe fittings, and the oil cooler and lines run to them. That way, the internal motor t-stat took care of the necessary cooling and routing of the oil. Never had a problem!

many ways to cook a chicken, this is my take on stuffing the oil around the system, I live in a hot (most of the time) place and cooling is very important as we have a lot of high speed roads followed by bottle necks and sitting still alot.
