I have cleaned the gearbox up a little (full of crud) and I came across some what looks like stress fractures but I'm not sure? they don't seem to go all the way through, they just look like they are on the surface but I really can't tell that well. Has anyone come across these on their cars?
here are some piccys

Those are casting marks, Acid. Shouldn't be anything to worry about. Take some medium sand paper and and a small area. If I'm right, those marks should be generally right at the surface.

mass production leaves scruff surfaces especially on alloy, costs money and time to smooth out.

Agreed, might be a little tiny bit of chilling as they first fill but most aluminium gearboxes are pretty rough on the surface! It's doesn't look to be an area that should be getting particularly stressed anyway....
