Oil lever? The dipstick? It's on the lower right side of the engine, looking from the back of the car, underneath the oil filler cap. If the engine is "hissing" that is not a good sign. You may have cooked the heads from running too hot.

i know its a silly question but with most cars it rhite in front of you a small stick with a hoop at the end but i ralley cant seem to see it on hear, and just to say this is the first car i have ever had, and ye when i turn the engine off there is a hissing noise that comes and goes for about five minutes

Never come across that with an air-cooled.....The dip stick end is a small metal hoop and if you've got a big air cleaner it is a bit hard to see it. (Mk1 Nova back ends were moulded to that it was possible to remove the dip stick without opening the bonnet (did anyone ever make use of that facility?))The oil is really important for the engine's cooling as well as lubrication, make finding and checking the level top priority!!

Ok, assuming that the oil level was within range, one possibility is fuel vaporization in the lines - you'd only hear it when the engine is off. you have to give us a little more info with the motor - size, carbs, that kind of thing if you know them. A photo would even help - you can post it on the forum's PhotoBucket account. "Hissing" is a little vague, especially with an air-cooled motor. It might be you have an oil leak somewhere that's dripping onto the exhaust manifold(s), or it might simply be the motor cooling down. Was it running correctly all along?

Compression pressure leaking past the piston rings perhaps? But only if it dies away after the engine has just been stopped. How are VW crankcases vented? Maybe its a blocked breather? A persistent hissing sound is more likely to be air leakage rather than fluids like oil or fuel, although clearly boiling oil on the headers is one possibility, as Rick points out. That would probably put out a fair bit of white smoke though.
