Hi Everyone

Ok, dropped fuel tank in and, after creating some brackets to compensate for what has been cut away the tank is standing proud as it is sitting on the fuel pipe that exits at the bottom of the tank.

Some advice would be great, have i got it wrong? do i need to add spacers?

Just not sure what to do

Here are the pics to make it clearer

Cheers

Ant

Looks basically fine , Ant - though it doesn't want to be resting on the pipe: spacers should do as you should have plenty of clearance above, otherwise you'll have to tweak the pipe a bit. (that does look like quite a gentle curve it's got in it, mine is much further off the top of the gearbox......

Just looked at the pictures in big - the base of the tank is too close to the starter motor, you should be able to jack it a couple of inches higher than that, which will sort the pipe problem!

Um...... just a suggestion, but if you turned the angle bracket round so that the leg that is against the tank doing nothing useful was against the bulkhead (either facing up or down, whichever worked better for space) and bolted the tank to the end that is at present pointing at the bulkhead it might work better and be easier to fix!

What Alex said. Looks like you've bought a later model 1303 tank - the fill is in the corner rather than on top of the tank. Those tanks are slightly deeper as you've found out, but a couple shims will sort it out.

I have a similar tank ( corner fill ) and my outlet clears the box by about 1 to 1 1/2" turn the brackets over and fix to sides like they say, you'll get some height there.

Mine is vertical in the rear bulkhead above the rear suspension tube, no problem.

Thanks guys,

I thought for a minute that i had bought an incorrect tank, its hard to tell as a lot of what would have been the support for the tank has ben cut away.

The reason i bought this tank was that it fills from the side which is where a bloody great whole is with the cap and neck, as the back of my car has been chopped it may well have had a different tank originally!

Well, i shall fiddle about this week and get it right, thanks for all your advice.

cheers

I have the same tank fitted to mine. Mine sits about 2 inches higher than yours so I suggest you just need to adapt the flanges you are using to mount it a bit higher up. I took the filler out through the wing with some fancy tubing bends, and it works just fine on the road.

Hi Mick

Thanks, have you got a pic of your tank and how you plumbed it in?, it could be a help for me this week!

When I took my old Beetle fuel tank out, each of the mounting bolts had a stack of penny washers to get enough clearance for the fuel outlet over the gearbox. I've found many uses for those penny washers over the years, but I've still got quite a few left - that's how many there were :D

I had the same problem but resolved it by the use of a banjo fitting in place of the thin bent pipe, and it clears well. As for the distance from the starter motor I can't say as my starter motor is off the Ford and is on the other side and in the front of the box.

Sorry Ant - I just looked through my picture log and I didn't get any of the filler pipework when I installed it - and it's mostly hidden behind the inner-wing shields at the moment. My car is finally back in one piece ready for Newark and I don't intend to take it apart again until later this year.

These few pics are all that I could get - which may mean nothing to you in isolation:

Basically it's a combination of 2" bendy fuel hose (dam**d expensive stuff that), a couple of 2" 90 degree stainless pipe bends and a stainless reducer that I fabricated to join the Jaguar filler on the wing to the 2" pipe.

Hi Mick

Thanks for that, i can see from the pic that your filler cap is much higher up than mine is, i may move it but as i have a huge whole already cut for it (not by me!) i may well stay at that position as long as i can get the fuel in to the tank ok.

This is what i'm most concerned about, if i raise the tank too high, i will have the fuel hose running up hill which i no good at all.

lauren, sounds like im not the first to have this issue !

Ok i will fiddle about this week and let you all know the progress .

Thanks everyone.

Cheers

Ant

P.s if anyone has any pics of there set ups it would be great to have a look. Thanks again

Having the filler set towards the rear where it looks 'nice' does give you a notoriously slow fill Ant!

I once timed out at a garage because it took that long to fill, I beleive it is because the breather tube ( about 3/4" ) goes back into the filler hose to far down. So as you pour fuel in the air cannot get out, I plan to alter this next time the fan shroud comes off.

Well the position of the filler cap has been decided for me unless i choose move it and have yet another hole to sort out, i will probably try it first and if what you suggest may happen er happens! when i fill her up, then i will have to deal with the hole then and move the filler cap/neck, but i think that its worth trying to get them to work together first.

we shall see!!!

Whatever happens you are in good company - the angled filler on the Lamborghini Miura was supposed to be notoriously difficult to fill. And although I have a separate vent valve and a large-bore hose between my wing-mounted swirl pot and fuel tank, some of these latest high volume petrol pumps can easily catch me out too. Just take your time at the pump - even with a stock engine, you won't get left too far behind in a Nova :D

We have the same problems here. I've found one way around the 'air lock', when filling the tank, bounce the rear of the car. This helps to break the 'air lock' and lets the guzzoline into the tank. Of course, you look like a right berk, but you're a right berk with a head turning car.
