I saw this on Samba, its expensive, but cool.

Hmm... very interesting. I've often wondered about a 4WD rear-engined Nova, using modified running gear. I was thinking specifically about the Alfa 33 set-up, which married the boxer engine and transaxle with a rear differential and centre Torsen viscous coupling. This configuration splits the torque 75% front, with 25% to the rear, which retains the FWD (understeer) characteristic. Of course, if you could turn it round for rear engined applications (the Alfa engine sits ahead of the front axle, like contemporary Audis), you would have 75% on the rear axle, with 25% on the front. This would retain the existing fundamental handling characteristics of the Nova (more sort of oversteer :blushing: ) but promote more grip, particularly in the wet, which can't be a bad thing.

I later discovered that the Alfa crownwheel and pinion can't be turned over, so apart from running the transmission upside down (like Ultimas do with the Porsche 'box) my sneaky plan was scuppered.

...But the Scooby uses exactly the same format as the Alfa; boxer engine up front, transmission behind and a FWD biased torque split. Add these whizzo components and you'll be running rings around the rest of us - on the outside of the corners, and in the wet :clapping:

Based on your past form I assume that this is a gentle hint that we ought to club together and buy you a set before you get out on the road again!!! :laugh: :rofl:

On the Scorpion fast attack and recon vehicle with the MoD in 1988 we used the VW sycro set up from the van, 3 ltr water boxer and 4x4, easy when money is no object and you are using a moded sand rail chassis.

And just about this time last month, I was talking to a club member, and he was telling me that there was a mob in Sydney working on a Scooby conversion for Bugs. I'm guessing this may just be the same mob.

Hmm, now, how much for a Scooby gearbox (and which gearbox?). I was thinking this year was going to be the year my voice broke, I mean, I slapped a new/different gearbox in, even if it was just to a single side plate Bug 'box.

As I have a Scooby ea82t, I'm hoping this will work on the same gearbox as the one from the Vortex (XT on either side of the pond). That way I won't have to worry about a conversion plate. I'd go with the 2wd Subaru shifter end cone idea.

I'll have to get in contact with the club member who brought this up to me, if it's the same mob and I deal through him, I may just get a few $$$ off. :wink: :laugh:

I could probably budget the $1500 for the crownwheel & pinion set, looks like somewhere from $500 to $1500 for the gearbox depending on what one I need. And I dare say it would have to be engineered again, so there's another $1000. Though I do know people who know people....

Of course, I'd have to find someone to rebuild the gearbox for me, but I can already think of a couple who might be able to help. Then there's all the things hanging odd the 'box. You know, the gubbins between the 'box and wheels. I'll have to find out what goes there, if anything's changed (and it probably has...).


Now if I could get cracking on working out the rack & pinion conversion, I might be able to get that done around the same time. Hmm, and the Liberty steering column.....

2010 could be an interesting year.

I went in the old fashion way, going from websearch (was lost from my bookmark), and found a few topics where the person who's offering the conversion (Original Manx), but not the one posted above. So you can still get into TheSamba, but you can't follow the link above to read the linked to topic.

Nice. Seems a lot of effort to go to to retain the VW floorpans and rear engine though, but the handling will certainly improve; your common or garden Bug should be able to take on a 1970s Porsche 911 with this package!

Did a bit of digging last night at TheSamba, and found the following.

As for cv/axle combos we have that covered. Releasing the new Subaflange shortly. It's a Subaru output flange that allows your current type 1, 4 or 930 cv and axles to bolt straight up. No need to change your setup. Same width from flange face to face as an 091 box with vw flange or type 1 box from flange to flange depending on where you put the roll pin through on the splines.

I also emailed Original Manx last night and got a reply this morning. His name is Todd. Here's the email I got back. I asked him is the gear's he's cut would suit the gearbox for the EA series of engines. It was a slim chance, but worth asking.

Thanks for getting in touch about the gearbox conversion!!

I have lots of detail on my website http://www.subarugears.com so feel free to post the link up on your club site and on the nova forum so pple can have a look at it for themselves.

Regarding the gears, they won't fit into the older EA series of gearboxes, these are a different design. They will only fit the EJ5MT series of gearboxes, of which we have plenty as you know.

The bellhousing bolts are slightly different between EA and EJ motors so you would need to build an adaptor plate to bolt the 5MT box onto your ea82T. I've attached a doco I found on the net of putting an EJ motor into an EA box, which shows how they've made the adaptor. You use the same adaptor but just backwards.

The 2wd box isn't what you want, you'll need a 4wd box. My gears were designed for the 4wd box which has a different gear stack setup to the 2wd box, even though they are the same basic design. I'm not a gearbox shop so can't provide you with a complete solution. Best to go to the wreckers or watch ebay and pick up a good $1,000 box, then add the gears. They cost $1650 usd plus you'll need $175 USD for the lokcing sleeve to make it 2WD. So budget $2,000 Aussie. Don't buy a shitty old 1990 box, it's not worth the trouble. Get as late model a box as possible so the synchros are in good condition and it hasn't been thrashed. It's also very important to set the gear contact patch up correctly with gear blue when you're assembling the reverse cut gears. Otherwise you'll thrash them out in no time. If you haven't done this before, get a gearbox pro to do it for you.

I am working with all drive subaroo down here in Sydney who are Subaru gearbox specialists. They rebuild hundreds of them every year. They'll probably soon offer a complete gearbox for purchase but in the meantime you could get them to set your gearbox up for you for a few hundred $$$ and know that it will be perfect.

As for output, use the Subaru inner CV's and have the Subaru axles cut down and resplined to fit the VW outer CV's. I will soon offer a bolt on flange, the Subaflange that will convert the Subaru drive output to bolt on any VW or Porsche CV. Just in the testing stage now.

Hope that gives you some good info, feel free to share the information around and ask as many questions as you like.

He also sent me the 25 page pdf file on swapping an EJ into a EA series car. This is the document he mentions above, about making the adapter plate. Additionally, I'd imagine there would be places out there who offer pre-made adapter plates.

So, need to track down a Scooby AWD 'box, and the inner cv's. Mod the Scooby cv's and of course, get Todds Crown Gear?Pinion set. get someone to rebuild the 'box.

One thing I forgot to ask Todd (which I've rectified by replying to his email), is how much modification to the chassis needs to be done. I'd also have to get that done. If I could get this done for $4,000 to $5,000 I'd say I'd be laughing. But I know how these projects can overrun the budget.
