View Full Version : exhaust design question
I currently have an EMPI Tuck-Away Dual Exhaust System that came with the car. While it isn't bad, I'd rather not have so much sticking/showing out the back of the car. I like the look of the EMPI Low-Mount Dual Exhaust System just below it. I was wondering though if it would be possible to save a few inches by altering the Low-Mount Dual Exhaust System where it exists the header. As it comes out in has a nice 160 degree(total guess) bend and goes back and comes around again. Instead of the 160 bend, what would be the harm of just making a short stubby T fitting and continuing along it's intended path, thereby hopefully saving a few inches of protrusion from the header flange. Make sense?

I'm not sure you'd save any space that way, Nic. Even a T would end up being out as far as the U-bends. Be aware that those merged systems really sit low - I tried one on my SR years back:

It didn't have the U-bends on it, but the collector part was the same.
Now, Steve's car in New York is using the CSP setup on his car: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1352&p=14356#p14356 (http://www.euro-nova.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1352&p=14356#p14356)
It doesn't seem to stick out quite as far as other collectors (and has that cool bundle of snakes look), but I haven't seen a side shot of it, either. I'm sure if you shoot him an email (or I can call him), he'd post something for you.

The problem with a four into one into two system or any system that has a central header is it has to meet the criteria of clearing the crank pulley sufficiantly and usually fit under the rear valance of a beetle. The ahendorf system I use (with the tail pipes cut off and 2" stainless steel tails welded on), is as neat as you can get but the only way to get a clean rear is a separate system for each side doing away with the central collector but these would be best made up as the systems available tend to be beach buggy cannon types and too noisy (and flimsy).

I also have an exhaust that fits onto a merged header, similar to this setup but a much larger bore. It's never been fitted and is on ebay this week.

found under road racer big bore system, but mine is a large flange with a 60mm bore.

I went with the dune buggy style headers. My original exhaust(manza) would occasionally hit the ground. Surprizingly fit rather good with some mods of course.
