Is there a head gasket as some books say yes and others no, also can't find any in the kit. What do they look like ( paper / metal? ), don't remember any coming off as well.

No head gaskets in aircooled engines, Jim. What you may be thinking of are copper spacers under the cylinders to adjust compression ratios.

Before you whack on the heads you might like to concider (if you haven't already) fitting steel inserts to the cylinder stud holes in the block, the standad M8 holes tend to pull out and the steel insert prevent this, easy to do and not expensive.

head now on and torqued to correct spec, carbs cleaned and fitted and tin wear in place. Came to fit the alternator strap and it has been moved by the fairies :confused1: it seems, cleaned garage in an attempt to find it but to no avail so anew one is on order. :annoyed:

Nah, no fairies. We car people have Gremlins.

I got to admit it, I've wanted one of these, along with the Pacer, ever since I got the Corgi toy cars of these weird little hatches.

Dang, that was such a missed opportunity by AMC - what they should have done was use the front end of the Javelin to make it, like the original AMX-GT...

Instead, AMC used the front half of the Hornet, which wasn't anywhere near as good looking in my view. Still, I suppose the Javelin had already morphed into the "fuselage" second generation car by then, and was much larger than the Hornet. And you could still get a pukka V8 in the Gremlin as well, which made this "compact" hatchback a bit of a bruiser on the street!

Yeah, now there is a sexy little hatch!!

Still, I'll take the production versions. They might be ugly ducklings, but they're certainly different.
