View Full Version : DETLING 2012

Due to family commitments I was only able to attend on Sunday afternoon after throwing the reek back together & blowing a layer of black satin over the not quite finished repairs.

All I have to show for it is a few 11 seconds clips from the mobile phone of the cars leaving.

Click on the immage & you will be taken to the photobucket album where they live

Nice one Martin. Here's my take on the proceedings...

I went to a Lancia trackday at Goodwood on Saturday, so I set off for Detling on Sunday. The weather forecast was generally cloudy with occasional showers, seasonal average temperatures, with the skies clearing through the afternoon. Not too bad then.

The reality, sadly, was quite different! After an uneventful drive of comfortably less than 2 hours, I left the M20 at Junction 7 under cloudy, but otherwise clear skies, only to climb the hill into a fog bank! Fully expecting to be kept waiting until 10am to be let on site like previous years, I was unprepared for what happened; the gate marshal waved me through, the security man in his Porkybin gave me a thumbs up and waved me through, all at 9:15am.

I was also surprised by the new directions once on site, but reasoned that it was just another way of getting to the usual show field. Not so - less than halfway down the main drag and we are at the Club Nova stand, with three Novas and Phil's Haldane on-site already!

Shortly after I arrived (that's four cars), Nena arrived to make it five in a row, and suddenly we're the largest club presence at the show!

Micks Red Nova, Nena, Green Machine, Rabs and Purple Passion wow the capacity crowd...

Dark skies taxing the low-light capabilities of my DSLR...

Site parking was a complete free-for-all, with only Club Nova managing to fill their alloted pitch. A chap called Roger turned up in this nice late-model S3 Esprit, parked on the DNA pitch (only one car arrived), had a cup of tea, left mid day.

Stratos replica is a regular at Detling, and was also spotted at Goodwood last November. Tyres are Michelin TB15s, which I have been looking at as I have been advised to increase the rolling radius of my rear wheels, and/or reduce the radius of the fronts. Trouble is, you just can't find wider performance tyres for 15" wheels any more - only 16"-18", and then only in stupidly low profiles. TB15s are a road legal historic race tyre, which has a size equivalent to 335/35 x 15. There doesn't seem to be much available in between - Dunlop CR83s are the equivalent of 275/40 x 15. Must be quite scary in the wet too...

Spotted this brilliantly restored/customised Honda N600 coupe a mile off - but as you can see, visiblilty was largely unimpeded by show cars or crowds of people! Favourite car of the day, by a very large margin :D

Last of the Mohicans. Regis Mohawk was trailed down from Yorkshire to see if anyone remembers it. Based on Ford Cortina running gear, the passing resemblence to the Lotus Excel/Eclat is entirely intentional - the idea was to sell a replica of the Lotus Elite, but Lotus refused permission. Only the tall bonnet spoils the otherwise sleek shape, a necessary evil to allow the upright Pinto engine to fit (the Lotus 900 series engines were canted over at 45 to reduce the bonnet profile). This car is actually the first factory built car, kept in storage for 20 years by the manufacturer. Only 12 deposits were taken, and nobody knows how many kits were actually sold out of that number. And this was the kit car Car of the Year, in 1990 (another recession year, if you remember).

As the dark clouds gathered over what was left of the smallest kit car show I have ever attended, this was the final line-up (Micks car is out of shot on the right) - 5 Novas, 1 Eureka. A fantastic turnout.

Hope you all had a safe journey home. It seemed like once I got off that darned hill, the weather was fine; no rain, even the sun came out as I came off the M25...
