Hi all

I have received the invitation and details for the Bristol Motor Club Family Day / Sports Car Event at Castle Combe Race Circuit:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q49/MickAtHome/CastleCombe2013_Invitation_zpsa52d4302.jpg

Here is the application to take your car. It's free entry unless you want to get a few laps round the track, in which case it's 10. I did it last year and it was great - see video on last years thread. :drive:

If you want a PDF copy of the application form then PM me your email address.

It's open to anyone, not just Club Nova. See you there if you can make it.

I've not heard that anyone else is joining me at this excellent event next Sunday (23 June) but assuming I get the exhaust welded up MicksRedNova will be joining in the track action again.

Attendance is free if your interested in looking at GT40's, 911's, Astons or Lambo's . Just arrive at 9am.. See you there if you are going.

Just bring yourself Ben. We will probably be in the paddock area with the Green Gazebo and a picnic.

For anyone that's interested here is a list of the 250 cars that are scheduled to be at Castle Combe tomorrow (Sunday 23rd June).

Only one Nova on the list but plenty of other kitcars ( :oops2: i suppose I should say 'replicas' or the GT40 and Cobra boys will be upset  )

I need Lauren to tell me if there's anything worth looking at amongst that lot.

Hmmm - Tornado Talisman, Berkley B105, Bond Bug, '70 Dodge Challenger, '65 Marcos, SAAB 99 Turbo, Sunbeam Stiletto...

Sounds like a good entry list, in spite of all the fake snakes. Did the weather hold up for you?

(Lots of showers over here)

The weather was overcast and windy all day but the rain held off and I managed to get 2 sessions on the track. The first on my own and the second with Ben as passenger.
Ben and I both captured some video which I will post on Youtube and put a link here.

I have also got some stills of the interesting other cars there that I will post later.

This year was another excellent turn-out of vehicles and another well organised event . I didn't win the 'favourite car' prize this year, that went to an Aston Martin DB6, but there was loads of interest in the Nova..

If the Bristol Motor Club run the event again next year I'd like to get a couple more Nova's there.

When you post the video, copy the link to the video and put it inside tags.

Example,

And the video will display embedded in your post.

Ben in my passenger seat as we chase a Porker. If you look closely at the Porker driver and passenger you can see we had them rattled!!

Nice update, some good pics there thanks.

Is that a drivers head 'bulge' on the GT40?

Steve

Yup. It's called a Gurney Bump, after the racing driver for Ford Dan Gurney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Gurney). It was needed so as to have room for his helmet. Note that the gurney bump is actually in the door, not the roof. The tops of the doors cut in deep on the roof to make it easier to get in and out of the car.

Small thread-jack.... Gurney bumps... possible on Novas/Sterlings maybe? Would it disturb the lines too much? Could certainly help ME with an extra inch or 2.

I've had that exact thought ever since I've had my 'reek. And as my 'reek is a t-top, it will be a removable panel. I haven't' bothered chasing the idea any further as I still don't have my roof back yet. lol But basically I'm thinking of taking a mould of the drivers panel (unless I get the moulds with the roof when I get it back, then I'll 'clone' that mould), then modify it using some good old fashion primary school basics, a rubber balloon and paper-mache. :D Then fiberglassing over that, body filler, etc. Then I'll be able to pull a part from that. Hopefully. Why go to that length just for one panel? In case I lose the panel if it gets blown off the car. Be good to be able to replace it if needed. :)

Cyco,
When you forget to clip them in they lift of at 72 km/h (45 mph), fortunately all it suffered was some scratches. I had visions of it being run over or severly chipped & fractured.

You get no warning at all, they just go. :outahere:

Yeah, I've heard a few stories of t-tops lifting off, most have ended up just scratched/stuffed, but also of at least one where it was driven over by a following vehicle.

But, it's never happened to you, right Bushy?

Finally got round to editing the video footage together of this year's laps round Castle Combe circuit. Thanks to Ben for taking some excellent video from trackside and sending it to me so I could cut it into my in-car video (taken on a Canon A550 fixed to a mount I have screwed to my rear parcel shelf). Much better sound this year (sorry about the rattle, I need to track that down) which does justice to the new stainless exhaust.

That Scooby should have been black flagged - there's no excuse for slowing down to a crawl, messing up the cornering lines of the cars behind, only to shoot off into the distance and then slow to a crawl again, especially when there is a no overtaking rule in place! Hope you enjoyed the tracktime in spite of that.

New engine and exhaust sound wicked though

Fantastic video, but agree the idiot in the Subaru should have been pulled in, floors it through chicane then dawdles around sweeping bends :nonono: .

Cars looking great and seems to handle very well round track.

Thanks Lauren / Keith.

The Scooby was there to curb my enthusiasm I think, if not for the braking practice he gave me I may have pushed it to the point where a 1967 Beetle chassis was no match for the extra power of the engine. :nonono:

These were my first laps about 20 minutes after arriving at the circuit. I discovered that one exhaust flange was loose at the end of the session, which accounts for the rather flatulant sounding exhaust note caught by Ben's trackside camera. It sounded better for the second session but we didn't video it.

Great video. And yeah, boo to the Scooby driver. You must admit though, he probably was spending that time crawling along to work out just what that was following him. lol

Mick,
So pleased to see that your Nova was not wearing Pirelli tyres

Totally agree with the comments about the scooby driver, hope your 2nd session was not also spent behind him.

May be next year the reek will make the trip.

I think the chattering noise the the cameras teeth as seeing the scooby loome larger made it a bit scared.

Great show old chap

Mick I think the noise was not mechanical, but you had a bad curry the night before :coat:

Sounded and looked great, Mick! One simple question: what is the gauge on the lower left of your dash? While watching, I noticed the needle swinging from one side to the other, almost like a boost gauge?

Without checking, I bet it's the famous vacuum gauge!

Great video but that drive would have had me doing my nut! :cursing: Ukhozi would have been in 2nd all the way  and that Pratt in front would have had a serious dose of HI halogen in his mirrors :@ . Personally I can't wait to drive Ukhozi through the Marbella and the new San Pedro tunnels, dual Dells and a Ahendorp exhaust with 56mm pipes at 6+K, can't wait :drive: . Followed a Lambo last month and it was AWSOME!

If that were me I would have not braked for the Subaru f***ing around, but overtaken it and given him a blast of the mighty air horns and an F1 style 'angry sign' out the window (oh haha - actually make that the sunroof!). Then I would have gone to chat with him afterwards, (providing he wasn't 6'4 and 16 stone of muscle).

I'm surprised the track officials didn't flag it over and off the track for a talking to.

Alex is correct when he says Vacuum guage. It's a Smiths guage with pipe to the inlet manifold. When cruising the motorway it should site in the green range (about mid dial) showing best economy. When you whack your foot down it goes fully anti-clockwise showing your fuel economy just went out the window.

Sadly the rule for the day was no-overtaking. If I had floored it past Mr Scoobie I would have been shown the black flag and chucked off the circuit. There is also a rule for the day that says 'no lagging to create lng gaps' but no one seems to enforce it. Despite the 'braking test' from the lag builders in front it was still good fun.
