I had a phone call from Sean on Saturday evening – am I coming to Mopars at Brooklands he asked? Well, what could I say? After dodging showers through Saturday, and with the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend looking like it was going to be a complete washout, a sunny Sunday at Brookie seemed like an excellent idea!

Sunday dawned and right on cue Big Tony's 1968 Barracuda coupé pulled up outside – we were going to travel in style! At least, that's what I thought at first, but rear seat legroom isn't so good in the old Fish, so it was just as well the journey was a short one. Here's what I saw through the lens of my DSLR...

Tony at the wheel, Sean in the passenger seat, and the open road...

You can see what I mean about the legroom...

...And here we are...

Tony's Fish is a very rare car – purchased by a Royal Navy commander on detachment in New York, the car was specified with RHD as it was going to be shipped back to the UK. Engine is the 225 c.i. slant-6, otherwise known as the “leaning tower of power”!

Ahh, but look at this – it's the Hemi Superbird replica we saw at Goodwood a few weeks back...

Imposing front end, designed by off-duty aerodynamicists from Chrysler Missiles & Space. In full race trim these cars could crack 200 mph – in 1968!

I only noticed afterwards that the call-outs on the hood read “472 c.i.”, not 427 c.i. (the normal capacity for a Hemi V8). Probably bored out a bit...

Moving on, this Fury III was the best looking C-body I saw all day. Beautifully presented, and powered by a 318 2-barrel, just like my old Barracuda!

Now this is my kinda car – a 1970 Dodge Challenger Western Sport Special. Built in California, the lack of performance parts made for a lovely clean look. This is a re-spray, but you could actually order your car in this colour – it was called “Sub-Lime” :D

Flat hood makes it for me. Shame about the bonnet pins, but they were an option you could buy at the time...

Chrysler station wagon was so low it looked like a hovercraft. Really impressive glass area too...

More to come!

Speaking of bonnet pins, here's another set, on a Triple Black 440 Six-Pack 1970 'Cuda belonging to the “mystery millionaire” Carlos Montiverdi. Apparently he has never driven it, the company that looks after his American car collection (RPM in Aldershot) drove it over...

“Hockey stick” stripes were standard for 'Cudas in 1970. Black on black 440 call-outs are a subtle touch. Steel wheels with dog dish hub caps have become synonymous with Chrysler performance cars, but only because they had to withdraw all their alloy wheels due to problems with cracking.

White '66 Charger is lovely. I used to help my friend Karen with her lovely black Charger back in the day. The electroluminescent dashboard took a while to sort out, but looks fabulous! Chrysler were planning to put a gas turbine in this car, and sell it as the Turbo-Charger. Sadly it was not to be. I would love to drive a turbine version of this car!

Square steering wheels are nothing new – here's one from a 1964 Chrysler New Yorker, with push-button everything, including the gearbox!

Three Chrysler wing cars, all in a row. The Superbird in the foreground is a replica, of course, but the car behind is genuine and so is the Dodge Daytona behind that, in spite of being hideously modified for drag racing...

Finally, this is us, in the Hindhead tunnel – the longest road tunnel in the UK, I love the way it twists and turns.

So that was Mopars at Brooklands 2014 – the sun shone all day long. It would be quite a different story the following day, with wall-to-wall rain, but it least it gave me an opportunity to finish off my heater controls.
