Right Guys and Galls

I was put in the unfortunate position of having one of my sill plates stolen. (long story) :cursing:

I am now having to have one manufactured and was wondering if any one else would be interested in a pair?

Any pics of what you are getting made.

Long way off for me but sometimes when a situation presents itself you have to ask.

Me too, depending on what material, design, lettering etc.

Can you post a pic of your existing one, assuming you intend to match it?

Here is my existing one, I have so far had it reproduced in CAD to hopefully send off to a couple of companies this week.

Ill be having a pair made, original one I have is stainless steel but could have them in ss or mild (to be coated or painted) or alloy.

Hello Keith.

Will they fit any MK?

I'm interested to see what they come out at stainless or mild steel.

Finally getting back on my feet and sorting out the mountain of little jobs I have, this been one,

Not finally worked out price but looking about £45 - £50 (MAX) for a small run of NOVA sill plates, made from Dull polished 0.9mm stainless

What do people think?

I'll be interested in a pair. I assume that's the price for a 'handed' pair.

Hi yes the price is for a handed pair, can do them to people on here for £45 delivered (pair). Need to take my original through to company to just confirm things are correct and we can defenatly do a run for that price they have quoted me. It requires me ordering 10 sets. I will take the hit initially as I need them for my project just hope I can sell the lot!

This is my only surviving original one

Similar question from me really - are they plain or with logo?

and is dull polished the right type of Stainless steel? I think my last ones were more polished than that finish:
https://flic.kr/p/5tLm1Q

certainly nterested - do you have a pic of what they are basing them on?

kdnova
16-05-2016, 09:43 PM
yes the logo will be cut in to them, please bare with me been hectic at the min.

Ive added photos of my origanal one earlier in this post.

Mine has polycarbonate on the back and lights mounted behind so when the roof opens the nova logo is back lit blue

Would people prefere polished finish?

I need to go meet the company to finalise details

well it turns out you lot are magpies! Pollished it is.

off tomorrow to look at a car to turn in to a teardrop caravan or a bbq! then Friday off to place order with the company. I have provided them with a cad drawing but I've insisted I take the original to ensure accuracy.

Thank you all for your patience. Once I place order they should be ready in a few days.

Right guys the order has now been placed! I have ordered the mirror polished finish as requested.

There would usually be an increase in price for the mirror finish. But as they had a part sheet in stock they agreed to keep price down.

Price is £45 per pair (one for each side) this is including delivery to UK.

This is a run of 10 pairs only.

So far I have the following peoples names on pairs

1.Me
2.jim73vw
3.micksrednova
4.Buffy
5.Mostin
6. Andrew
7 (other)

This list is only from this thread subject to the above list completing this leaves 3 pairs up for grabs.

If no one else on here is fussed I'll stick the remaining pairs on Ebay.

Hopefully later this week I will have them so will post pics and then they can be sent out upon receipt of payment

Thanks

Mine too. Although a slight kink in the pointy end where the package was probably chucked in the delivery van.
Mirror finish looks great. Can't wait to see how they look fitted.

First one fitted.http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q49/MickAtHome/Mobile%20Uploads/tmp_6322-20160606_222946-2023739529_zpsoaiofonf.jpg

I modified it slightly by rounding the pointy end and cutting a different angle on the part that runs along the hinge end. Its held down with SS self tappers and double sided tape.
Just need to polish the rest of MicksRedNova to match.

I got my new Nova Side Sill kick plates made up. I wanted longer ones that would go up the section where the canopy rises also as this can be prone to scratches from jean studs on back pockets etc.. as you slide in. I made them out of 0.5mm polished stainless so they would conform to the shape of the body lip where it raises up.

Iím taking them to the UK tomorrow so lets hope my paper templates where correct and everything fits well.

Don't joke I have been a bit worried about that ! I'm going to put them between plywood and then if I get grief at check in will just say if people can take Ski's with them as luggage why can I take a 1.2m x 20cm board

Peter

And they would say that as they have a sharp edge they could be used as a weapon. I had to stow my hand luggae in the hold as I had 10m of speaker cable and, "it could be used the retrain passengers" ???
but of course that long it would have to be in the hold.

Did you make them yourself? looks like a nice job what did you use to cut the shape?

Unfortunately I didn't make them myself, I did the templates and created the CAD files. The process went something like this (the long answer) :-

1) Tape card down to the side sill of the car
2) Trace around the edge of the side sill with a pencil using my finger as a guide to keep about 1.5 cm from the edges of the car
3) Cut out the template
4) Mark any holes needed for cables and limit switches (driver's side in my case)
5) Fly to Singapore (this step is not strictly necessary! )
6) Mark the cards with lots of lines to help lining up images later once scanned
7) Scan each card in 4 sections on an A3 photocopier / scanner
8) Use adobe photoshop to join the 4 images back together into one, being careful to line everything up (helps to make one layer transparent to align the lines marked on the template)
9) Use adobe illustrator to convert the JPG file into a Vector format file
10) Export the file into a CAD format
11) Take it to the machine shop and have them check the scale remained the same and add the fixing holes (I don't really know how to use CAD myself)
12) Machine shop had trouble exporting my image to the laser cutting machine, so they ended up redrawing it as another layer. Effectively tracing over my original file and smoothing out a few areas where my cutting of the template wasn't great.
13) Export to their machine cutting machine format and hey presto two asymmetrical side sills. They are supposed to be asymmetrical as like everything else on the car nothing matches and I made individual templates for the driver and passenger side.

Unfortunately the machine shop wouldn't give me the redone soft copies!! :@ against company policy apparently. I'm phoning the boss later today to see if I can twist his arm.

Also I did contemplate adding the Nova logo from the CAD file that DMCDEC produced but in the end I didn't as I envisaged that every time I polished them the polish would get into all the nooks and crannies of the cut out logo and be real pain in the butt to clean off. But it is a nice interpretation of the original logo

They look really nice!
I can see they are a lot thinner than mine , which make them more pliable. I think mine are 1.5mm-2mm stainless. I had difficulty bending them, but didn't screw down yet.

islandman
03-10-2016, 09:27 PM
I had a similar set made up in 1.5mm several years ago, I tried to fit them but as you say they were not pliable enough to conform to the body.

Here they are fitted, they are 0.5mm stainless and bend very easily

All that drawing, transferring and copying, why not just take paper templates and they would have made cad from those?

Because there are no straight lines and have no reference points, so putting them into CAD accurately costs money (i.e. man-hours). So going the route I did makes sure they match the templates and reduces my bill!
