TO all CLUB NOVA members,

Stoneleigh is fast approaching & the club will be catering for paid up club members on Sunday. To ensure we provide enough food & don't over spend can I please ask that those attending the show to indicate their intension here.

I have also been thinking about the clubs future & how it could look. One thing that I believe is missing is a club icon. We don't have any branding or club emblem that I am aware of. I throwing this open to you, the club members, for your suggestions & ideas. Either post them here or send me a personal message via this site.

Looking forward to seeing every one very soon.

Bushboy

I will be there, to say Hi and to renew my membership, but not in the Nova :(

While I should be able to get the car just up to snuff to pass its MOT - I need to fit a new brake light switch and fully re-check/bleed the whole system - it would certainly be a minimum pass & I'd prefer to put some more time into it before venturing on a 170 mile round trip.

However, I am also in the final throes of planning my wedding and I don't think I can commit the time to do all the asks I'd want to do, in the time available.

So I've decided to postpone the MOT until I've had a chance to do a few more jobs (and do them properly), so I can be certain of a solid MOT pass, firm in the knowledge that the car is capable of of an extended trip.

That said, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing you all (probably on the Monday, as I need to be at the Stanford Hall VW show on the Sunday)!

cheers

Paul

Hope to see you all there.

Here is a sneak preview of the other Pie Valley exhibit. MG suspension but without the subframe and using an Audi V6 and transaxle. Not as evocative as the Subaru, but much cheaper to buy and much easier to package. Thanks for prompting me to have another look at it Dirk - I'd originally discounted it but binning a the fans and oil cooler allowed it to squeeze in to the same chassis that just fitted the Subaru flat four!

The transverse Rover V6 (and hopefully some others) will fit too - and give 90mm more cabin space than a longitudinal installation.

But most intriguingly, the V8 is only around 50mm longer...!

Cheers,

Ed

Wow - now that has potential. I always wondered about an in-line V6 (my personal preference was the Alfa Busso V6), and the Audi FWD transaxle has become the goto option for mid-engine installations. And VAG of course, which maintains the spiritual link to the VW!

Dirk
19-04-2017, 09:43 PM
Now that looks like a proper mid engine car. Have you sorted gear change linkage and drive shafts?, l look forward to seeing it at Stones.

That looks like an impressive lump, what is the expected BHP out of one of those units?

Now you have to put your Nova body on that chassis and engine setup :D

edmorton
20-04-2017, 06:43 AM
Thank you! Yes, the Alfa V6 would be marvellous, but as you say Lauren, the Audi lump gives a much needed VAG connection. Sadly, the K series engine is a stumbling block for the uninitiated and/or VW obsessed, so I needed another option.

Driveshafts are on order, but I have to wait behind a long queue of grass track racers - this seemed like a good proving ground for the product. They're manufactured from a steel billet rather than welded together, so they're a bit dear, but very reliable. Would you believe that the MGF cable shift arm fits the Audi selector shaft?! The cables might need replacing for slightly longer ones, but otherwise I'm planning to keep the MG gear selector setup.

The lump produces about 170bhp in standard form, hopefully a bit more with all the emissions gubbins in the skip. Not huge, but lots of torque, and a K series would be a bit pushed at this level. Even in 2001 Audi were using fly by wire throttles and variable intake length manifolds but most of this looks like it can be simplified in my Luddite fashion to run with an Emerald ECU and a (slightly Chavvy-looking) aftermarket throttle body with a throttle cable.

Haven't tried a Nova body yet - I had to grab the opportunity to paint the chassis when I could and I don't want to damage the paint now it's done. I suspect you might find it a bit tight, David, as the front bulkhead is 90mm further forward than the chassis you sat in last year. However, transverse installations keep the original chassis dimensions so you could still fit a V6 out of an Audi TT or Golf R...or an MG ZS...

I'd like to get this chassis on the road asap, so once again I think a buggy is the best option. I still quite like the idea of a ratty matt black Charger with slot mags running a biturbo V6 though.

Now how can I make my garage bigger for another project !!!!!!

wizrod
20-04-2017, 07:48 AM
... the front bulkhead is 90mm further forward than the chassis you sat in last year...

Ed,

Where does that put the bulkhead in relation to the centerline of the rear axel, in terms of the horizontal distance...?

Spacenut
20-04-2017, 06:11 PM
The front bulkhead is 90mm further forward than the chassis you sat in last year.

That was always going to be the problem with an in-line V6 under a Nova bodyshell - the styling places the driver too far back, and there isn't enough headroom to tuck the engine under the occupants, something that you can do with a boxer engine (well, a 4-cylinder SOHC at any rate).

As you say, a different kit car body like the Siva Saluki/MBC Charger will work better.

Can you eke a bit more room by moving the gearbox back and angling the driveshafts forward a bit? It's got to be a Nova really, there isn't another 70s kit car that looks anywhere near as good!

edmorton
21-04-2017, 11:52 AM
There's about 600mm clearance from the wheel centre to the back of the bulkhead (bearing in mind the bulkhead angles forward so there's a bit more clearance around the centre tunnel. The Audi is approximately 620mm from the wheel centre to front pulley.

I guess I need a get a Nova body on it first though...

Driveshafts are already angled a bit Lauren, although the chassis doesn't help in this regard. Scope for changing things though, it's definitely a prototype at the moment!

Anyway, please come and have a look. I'm suffering Nova withdrawal symptoms!

bushboy
21-04-2017, 12:03 PM
Ed,
Why are you doing this for? Creating all these tempting engine alternatives in a nice space frame chassis that will fit under the Eureka shell!!!,

The Mazda V6 in the reek is supposedly 170 horses, not quite that many now as it is a tired motor, however, if time permits, & you ant to experience 170ish horses in a Eureka, come & track me down & I can give you a Nova fix.

See you really soon

I've just been out and measured, and that 600mm would fit a Bug engine and (flipped-diff) gearbox with some wiggle room to spare....For those who prefer not to put water in their engines ;)

Really looking forward to seeing it in the flesh and having a chat...

Our local scrap yard is full of MG V6s at the moment, (well three!) handsome looking engine and that alluring '190' badge - almost tempted to throw 100 at one of them but must not get distracted from the K series!

So, I am going to be attending on the Sunday, hopefully with my car.

I will bring with me some items that I no longer need, as I have converted my suspension to red9 spax.

I had originally fitted brand new " coilovers" front and back to my car which I no longer need. I would rather someone from the club benefitted from these so,

For the price of the club membership ( which I think is 15 ) the buyer can have these shocks, personally delivered to the stand.

Bargain or what........

Are they the Rover 45 based one (the ZS) or 75 (ZT)? The former uses a version of the MGF PG1 gearbox, but with different drive shafts. I could really do with some of these drive shafts! The ZT uses a different gearbox altogether. Ask me how I know...!

The V6 will fit in the MG subframe but requires excessive butchery IMHO - hence the new chassis. Happy to swap if you like!

Bushboy, that is a very kind offer. That would be a memorable second ever Nova ride. (The first was courtesy of Mick several years ago, also at Stones...).

Wizrod, see you at the show...I'll bring a tape measure.

Hi Wayne,
For clarification, they are two seperate entities.
the club fees for membership as Gary posted above covers the costs for running the club, the shows, food and so on.

The Euro-Nova site runs on donations to keep it going, fees associated with the hosting, domain and other such costs.

Hopefully that's helpful?

Does anyone who is going tomorrow happen to have a 1600 aircooled exhaust stud or bolt that will fit laying around? Just noticed one of mine has gone walkabouts and typically none of the local shops have anything to suit.

If not I'm hoping I can find one at the show!

Looks like a great line up this year, gutted I can only do UK once in 3 or 4 years but next year maybe I will be retired, again, finally, 14 buggys out on Friday and again on Sunday and as we only have 15 at the moment I have to get them all road worthy and sound, that can mean a LOT of work so no UK.

Look forward to some more photos, unfortunately as you guys may have noticed the attendance across the road at the Eagle stand was two, very disappointing, still better than none and big thanks to hose who did turn up, so important or we could loose the last decent show in the UK. :ermm:

Well we left early this morning to avoid the usual traffic jams and foul weather coming up from Cornwall, The traffic jam avoidance was a complete success, but we did have atrocious heavy spray conditions most of the way through Devon and Cornwall. Car behaved very well.

I didn't get much time for photos - though Liz did and will post hers tomorrow. I grabbed a few of the Nova in the morning sun before setting off at 8am on Saturday:

It's got a chassis copying a Ferrari one, has an Allfa V6 engine, the owner makes everything from scratch and even taught himself to cut windscreens so that he could trim down a Peugeot one to suit it. It's a 2+2 and has the sort of cavernous boot that I hope the MG chassis will give my new project Nova! He did have a Nova before this car, and made his own hydraulic pump to drive the roof - worth having a chat with him if you catch him at a show in the future!
Don't know if this will come out - the camera struggled a bit as it was about 11 o'clock at night, but I liked the sodium street-light and blazing campfire illuminating the flank of the car:

Back home here - Sarah and Martha left earlier in the daily to avoid Bank Holiday traffic (with success).

I was committed to the end of day with the car on the CKC stand, and in the end the organisers declared the show closed at 4.30 with Hall gates starting to open at 4.45.

Many less professional stands were packed up waiting at 4pm, but we held out out till the 4.30 mark and then started to strip down.

The team kindly encouraged me to get the Nova out before the trucks blocked the way so I set off at 5pm, and was home at 8pm - 169 miles in total, so a very clear run.

Journey up was 2 stops over the 169 miles, an initial 70 mile leg, then 60 miles and then 39.

Journey back was an initial 65 miles until fuel was needed, and then the remaining miles in one stint.

The run up and initial 65 miles back consumed around 25 litres, and equates to mid to high 30s mpg. For a first long run I am very chuffed, and found the long run not too tiring, aided greatly by the new soundproofing and gearbox set up and the engine not having to rev too highly to cruise along in 5th.

Once a little closer to home With around 50 miles to go I felt on home turf, and happier to test my right foot a little more, so the fuel economy may have gone down a bit - but a trouble free drive.

including the road testing last week that is 500 miles covered - time to change the gearbox oil on the new box!

Good to chat to fellow Nova owners at the show, and looking forward to the next one,

I would like to say thank you on behalf of the committee to all for a great event, to everyone came and signed up again with club Nova. This year we had 5 new members join the club which is brilliant. I have pictures from the event I will post later once I have gone through them. I would like to say thank you to Martin, Ben and Alex for all the hard work put in behind the scenes for going to Stoneleigh. As my first year as membership secretary I hadn't realised the level of work needed to be put in behind the scenes for preparing and setting up for club shows. On that note I would also like to say thank you to those who have been club officials in previous for their work and dedication to keep club nova running and thank you to the members who turned up early as well to help with the set up of the club stand. We also this year had 2 members who made donations on top of their membership fee to club nova towards the running costs of the club, we are very grateful for your kind donations to the club. I need to also mention how grateful we were to Di, Ray's wife, for providing catering to the club all weekend. She did this on rather short notice and managed to prepare and get everything together in less than a week to provide lovely breakfast, lunch and dinner for us all on Saturday evening, Sunday all day and Monday breakfast and lunch. We are very grateful for all your hospitality in taking care of us all and promise to give you more notice next year!

We almost had a disaster on the way back. Ben caught up with us in his van and followed us back for a chunk of the m5 until he got off Gloucester. Just after he got off we hit really bad wet conditions eerily similar to those Mick lost his nova in last year on the way back from Castle Combe. Luckily we were by Michaelwood services so we pulled in there to let the storm pass. Ray went off the services to find they had no power as they had been hit by lightening shortly before we got there. Whilst he was off we noticed his rear tyre had gone flat so he goes around to the garage to pump it up and that was when we found out the reason for the lack of power and manage to find an AA man in his van in the car park. He comes over to pump the tyre up and find the reason for it being flat. As you can see somewhere along the line his tyre has picked up some kind of large rivet or screw. Safe to say we all made it home safely just a bit later than we had planned and some worry going on back at home with Ray's wife and daughter who had left slightly earlier to get back.

I have an exam tomorrow that I should be swatting for so this will be brief until tomorrow night.

The weather was treating us well until 21:30 Sunday night when Micksrednova summoned the Stoneleigh Rain gods by mentioning that we are usually sheltering from the rain at this time!

Di went to great lengths to ensure that every one had a cup of tea in one hand and some food in the other. Her efforts were appreciated by all and her beaming smile and friendly manor set the scene for the entire week end.

On Sunday the Nova sit was mill with the punters asking about the cars and enjoying the WOW of these fantastic cars.

I will post my pictures tomorrow when I have the time to do so.

Not without incident though. One of his hoses sprung a leak just as he pulled up onto the stand so it was out with the tools for a quick hose change.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend. We made it home OK although I had everything crossed and eyes glued to the temp gauge whenever we came to any hills. Mike reckons the Dakar engine will be taking priority over the Nova rebuild for the time being as it's our only tow car.

I didn't take many at the show I'm afraid as the light wasn't ideal.

I have a few from road testing the week before (excuse the work bag and general litter in the car) that should give you an idea:

Thanks for the Photos Jim, its always nice to see a Nova with a completely finished interior (I hope one day mine will join that category!).

Do you get any screen reflection issues with the red colour on the screen?

Not that I have noticed David.

It was a small concern, mainly as others in here have referred to glare before from certain interior colours/finishes.

I drove around with some of the swatches on the Skoda dash and they didn't concern me, so just went for it.

In my sunset to night testing last week i didn't notice any glare, and to/from Stones no problem. This morning at 5.30am on the motorway to Milton Keynes I did notice my smoot rubberised grey heater vents on the Skoda reflect up well on the screen though!

Thankyou for an inspirational weekend. I'm sorry I was tied to the stand most of the time. but seeing some beautifully completed Novas however briefly was extremely welcome. Hopefully there'll be more to come. Maybe another one with a V6...

I'm on weather watch. My car isn't water proof yet with some exposed areas that wouldn't do too well if it pees it down.

Guys.....in the Highly unlikely event that someone shows up @ the Stand asking if anyone wants to buy a Nova please pass on my details....(I mean any future shows ;o)

I hadn't realised your Reek had more differences to the Nova than the ears, Bushboy, those vents on the sides more than for looks?

And I saw it was still in the throes of repairs from the pictures, If memory serves, some muppet thought the front of his car was a ramp...?

G'day Gaisa,

The four production differences are the "Elephant ears" on the top shoulder inlets, the light covers, THe Factory "T" top roof & the windscreen.

The large side scoops are functional & feed the single rear mounted radiator. I cut these in myself and did the associated glass work. Next step is to replace the single rad with twin units & move them out into the air stream as I still have cooling issues.

Cheers

Bushboy
