I would buy it if I thought I would get away with it. Unfortunately it would be too difficult to hide a third bodyshell.. But what a great car - lovely engine too.

Ah, but is it MOT exempt? :coat:
A job well done Alistair. It can be quite fiddly but the plastic pipe trick is a big help
What part of the block are you going to re-bore? Personally I would fit new Barrels :coat:
I recently bought a type 4 engine so I will be following this thread with interest. Have you had this engine running at all? And is it complete with all the tinware, carb , and heat exchangers? I...
Yes you're within a bawhair* of getting the body back on. What's left? Plumb and bleed the brakes? replace the fuel tank? Then it's ready to be bolted back down isn't it?
Looking forward to...
I couldn't agree more. My first Nova was built from a factory kit supplied back in the 80's and was a far easier build than the "restoration" I undertook with my present car
Thanks to Dirk who very kindly sent me an old transaxle casing I was able to check the compressions on my type 4 engine, and was even able to start it and run it for a few minutes.
As expected,...
Fantastic - this car is going to be brutal - Proper mid engined too
Great find and a lovely car for you. I'm loving the engine too - didn't realise you could get trombone exhausts for the type 4
What does it drive like - is it very quick?
Looks great - very plush interior
Of course you should - it's the law...
Yes great idea. I have recently removed the rear widow from my car to improve the airflow and it stops the screen from misting up.
Well done Martha & James, Sarah would have been very proud of you both
Hi David - welcome to the forum. Why not start a thread about your car's story? We all like to read about other projects on the go.
Nice neat solution for the steering column going through the bulkhead
First and only wife, 40 years and counting, and I've only had my Nova 13.5 years. Mind you I did have a brief 2 year fling with another Nova back in the 1980's..
Thanks for all the advice. A suitable manifold is about £180 so given that this would only be temporary, and with minimal performance gains I think I'll put the idea on hold
Thanks Alistair
Just a thought - would it be worthwhile fitting the weber 32/36 that came with the engine onto my 1300cc twinport in the meantime? Any idea what sort of power increase it would...
That would be great Alistair - I've just been looking on line at the price of engine stands and yokes. I rebuilt my existing engine on the garage floor but a stand would make it much easier.
Pleased to see you're back working on the car. Hopefully you'll make rapid progress this spring and summer and we'll soon see the body fitted back on the car. That's the moment when you'll see...
No I never saw it running as it was already removed from the Camper van - this is why I'm keen to get a bellhousing to try running it before I take it apart to pinpoint the area I need to concentrate...
As far as I know it's just the splines on the type 4 clutch plate that are different - so I need to substitute the type 4 clutch with a type 1 clutch plate of suitable diameter (200mm I believe)
I did just as you have suggested and it's quite clear there are no sticking valves or signs of combustion getting into the valve cover area which might have indicated a faulty valve
When I rebuilt my Beetle engine I had it in and out of the car three times before I had it working properly. For that reason alone I think it would be useful to be able to test compressions and even...
