In the photo isn't there still a weak spot where the copper exits the metal crimp on the wire strands? (which would be the same as if it was soldered) This would also be worse if the insulation went...
When fitting the new starter did you check / replace the bush in the housing that the starter spindle fits into? I had problems with turning over many years ago and found the bush was worn on one...

Like Brett says, re starter - check the bush that the starter spindle fits into when fitting to engine, if that's worn you will have turning problems... cheap fix `¬)
