It looks as if the paperwork and inspections will take a while after the car is ready and that should be about 6 months after I fix the Mercedes 170 injector and then the BMW E30 tune up/service, by which time I have new crank for the Bergman to fit and then the wife`s Cross will need new tyres. Shit, it looks horrible when I write down like that

Had an idea hit me, well it was my right knee actually. If I cut the end of the dash off at an angle and build the door card out to meet it I have a LOT more room to get in and out without clouting my ageing bones on the dash and I still get the wrap-a-round look I want. Still keeping the centre section which is now in one piece with the speedo built in. SO, off we go again, Mk? (soon as I finish the doors and the wiring and.....

Just had another idea, , reading all those stories of cracked screen due to holding on to the corner of the opening to haul ones self in and out, I though of fitting a folding handle between the hinges on the roof.
You know the ones that are fitted above the doors of saloon cars for the same reason and to hang on to when nutters are driving.

Good day in the 'shed', got a fair bit of electrical stuff done. The striped out remote for the doors rewired ready to build into the centre console and blow me, they work, had slight problem that 'new' chrome remote didn't, so had to reprograme it.
Made up a 16 way ribbon cable by soldering 16 wires between the PCBs of the MG speedo and gaffer taping into a unit, that worked, even if the speedo is still playing up. I would like Astra GTi speedo but I don't know if the inputs are anolouge like the MG or via the ECU, yet ;-)
Prepared the boot and bonnet ready for the carbon fibre that's on its way and modified the door hinge bolts so they have countersunk allen screws on the underside and SS spacer washers and nylock nuts above instead of rusty bolts from above.
Had a poke around the screen as it has to be re-set and etched, mastic stuff is very hard on the surface but soft underneath but I have to be careful as there are signs of delaminating around the edges :-(
    Onwards and sideways, :-)

    Full day in the 'shed'.
Stripped and adjusted rear brake shoes and handbrake,
Changed roof antenna twig and repaired wiring.
Moved third brake light from rear window to rear spoiler,
    Checked all levels and pressures,
Cleaned rust from under rear window, treated and painted.
And NO not on the Eagle, on the wife's Corsa, had intended to spend a second day on the SS refitting the drivers door and the passengers side strut bracket but that lot got in the way.

MG maestro dash is too iffy to fit, not at all stable, so it went bye byes.
All done with smoke and mirrors. IF the digi dash is an analogue input one as is the MG and the early Opel/Vauxhall ones, as in direct from the sensors and senders, it's easy, you can't fit ones from say a Carlton as it has to go via the ECU and thank god I don't have an ECU.

Before and after, (when it gets here in about a week)

Oil pressure from sensor on remote oil filter housing
Oil switch from standard unit on crankcase by dizzy
temperature is oil not water, on lower right of crankcase
    Volt meter from ignition
fuel gauge from standard sender in tank
Speedo from transducer on end of standard cable
tacho from neg - on HT coil
Warning lights direct from alternator, side lights, main beam, handbrake, brake fluid, fuel tanks sender, indicators etc,
add 12v ignition and earth and there ya go, fit it to any car.

I guess if the Maestro module is too flaky it had to go, but I do prefer it to the GM dash, if I'm honest. However, my main gripe with the Astra dash (and the Carlton and Senator displays as well) is that horrible dull orange backlighting, which looks rather patchy and uneven. I did see one of those "how-to" things on the Interweb where a Carlton display was changed from orange to blue, which looked a lot more classy!

But I accept that it is all down to personal taste, and obviously people are getting fed up with blue displays now

Hope the interfaces to your sensors are straightforward.

There are a few speedos I like better than the Astra one but nearly all of them are OBD2 or ECU driven, same goes for HUD and LCD panel units, then again the Astra one is easy to read at a glance and yes, one can change the back light colour, red, green, blue, white, pink, etc. Also switches from MPH to KPH with a twist of the trip knob, need to figure out if I need to access that or just leave it behind the black out cover.
There might be a need to 'calibrate' the gauges a bit but it should all work fine. Speedo is just a case of 'pulses per mile' and I can use any Hall effect trigger with the 'segs' on the back of the front hub. rather than on the end of the cable as now, maybe, possibly, perhaps.(The MG one was 4 pulses per rev off of the gearbox and now it is 8 PPR off of the front wheel).
