Recommend MOT test centres/inspector in Chelmsford/Essex are

Still a little way off on my build but after reading a few MOT posts, i would like to know if there are any "sympathetic" mot centres in the Chelmsford/Essex area? It's always going to be easier if there is an MOT inspector who knows (roughly) what they are looking at.

I will be also asking the baja/beach buggy crew to see if they have any suggestions and will report their answers...for those that are also interested.

I can do Grays, just means i get a longer test drive to the centre......what's was/is it called?

Just out of curiosity is there a law as to how far your allowed to travel to mot centre?
coz if not then surely i could go up the m1 to uni(coventry) in my Eagle ss and merely pre-book a test up there.
The possibility of losing £25/faiiing is less than getting it transporting it up and I can buy plates/day insure the car without an mot can i not?
Surely its just tax that i'll be pulled up for other than mot and then i can produce the "on way to the only mot centre with knowledge on this car, afraid it's in coventry, not happy myself having to travel so far" b***s***
I have a feeling you'll all say though.

I think if you are on the M25 and got stopped, the excuse I have an MOT booked in York would not hold up.
Then again my wife drove around until May and hers expired in Feb, it was my fault apparantley

Quite a few people I know, parents included, haven't got their MOT reminders this year.

We cannot condone driving the car on the road without an MOT.
The limit on the station distance is simply the closest MOT centre to where the car is located.

See...knew someone would douse my curiosity.

Technically you don't need to condone anything said above. A little bit more research shows: This is what the law states:

Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test:
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.
This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.

No mention of distance what-so-ever, not even "go by the straightest route, without stopping" which seems to be added but isn't there. Reading other forums (mainly vw ones admittedly) many people, buggie/baja owners especially, have traveled further than essex-coventry, been pulled and merely produced documentation of mot test centre pre-booking form and explained that it was a specialist test centre specialising in beach buggies/whatever.

What I would condone instead (people always to condone things ) though is driving a car that isn't road worthy, whether to pre-booked mot, or not. Which i wouldn't do seeing as i like life a little too much.

    Back to the original question:

Anyone know of a good MOT centre in the Essex/Chelmsford area who have dealt with our cars before?

My comment above is from past experience.
Also, anything of this nature which has hinted at illegal activity must be shown not to be condoned or encouraged by euro-nova!!

Driving your car such a distance without an mot, prebooked or not is illegal in my eyes. At minimum it's bending the law to suit your circumstances.

Suprising how many 3 year old cars fail their first test, or how many countries don't bother with any test.
Saw in 2005 in Dominican republic a truck which was just a bare shell no doors no skin or glass with 3 men trunddling down the main street.

An MOT test just means the car is deemed to have passed a set of regulations at a set time by a particular individual. As you say Jim, a lot of cars fail their first MOT, I wonder how many of those cars have actually been unsafe for many months.
