    New Law - Monday 7 March 2011

Just in case you missed it a new rule regarding vehicle insurance comes in on Monday. If you have a vehicle that is registered/Taxed/MOT'd you must also have it insured, unless it is on a SORN.

This could affect a lot of people in the kit-car world who may only choose to insure their car during the 'driving season' (i.e. the few months that the sun sometime shines in UK). If you cancel or suspend your insurance when you lay-up your car for the winter, you now have to declare SORN.

Another DVLA/government tactic aimed at the 'dodgy scally brigade' (which they will just ignore or get round) that causes hassle for us honest motoring enthusiasts.

This is utter bonkers and just doesnt work for historic vehicles used occasionally. Well if thats what they want, then maybe people should just keep SORNing and UnSORNing their cars every few weeks until the system breaks down. How do you SORN a vehicle thats taxed and MOT'd? Can you?

This is a ridiculous law, I have a punto which is taxed and MOTed but I havent insured it yet because I am doing work on the engine, so now I have to cash the tax in and sorn it, then re tax it when I have swapped my insurance over?
Is this really going to effect uninsured drivers, most uninsured drivers drive a friends, partners or parents car which is taxed, moted and insured! (just not by them)
Oh well, just another way the DVLA can theive £80 out of your pocket.

Wait. You guys could choose to insure your vehicles for only a couple of months if you wanted to? I suggest you eat a bag of concrete and harden the %$& up, most of the western world has to insure your vehicles all the time. It costs me less than 650 of your pounds a year to insure both cars and the contents of my house (only renting), through a specialist insurer.

And there you go, a young driver over here with a 1.2 vauxhall corsa will pay £1700 if a female and £3400 if a male (was on the news the other night).
My middle daughter paid over £600 for a 1100cc kit car BUT if it had been the 1100cc Ford Fiesta that gave up it's parts then it would have been well over £1250.
It's not so long ago that those in control were worried that they were loosing revenue from people driving cars without tax, now that seems to have paled into insignificance as more and more people are driving without insurance because it costs so much. People who insure their cars correctly actually pay towards the costs of those that have accidents with people who are not insured. If the costs came down then less people would drive without insurance.
One statistic stated (true or false who really knows) that in Glasgow there was a likelyhood of 1 in 3 drivers under the age of 25 actually driving about without insurance because they couldn't get insured at a reasonable cost.
The costs have increased because more people are getting ambulance chasers to get them money for uninsured loses (wages etc.) and whiplash injuries. I know of one such case and it went on for 4 years and by the time the insurance company had paid out the just over £9000 for whiplash (that wasn't a real claim) he had visited a Harley street doctor 6 times (who also has to be paid) and the solicitors got their money from the insurance company as well so what was the total cost of the injuries to the insurance company for a very small accident where the cost of the repair to the two cars was painting the bumpers?
I'll go now, thanks for winding me up Cyco and it's only saturday morning.

Re: New Law - Monday 7 March 2011

Sorry, my aim wasn't to get you guys riled up. But we've been paying hand over fist just to get our cars on the road, and that's not even with insurance. I've got to get my Camry through rego this month, which will cost over $700 AUD. That's for rego and 3rd party insurance. And then there's my comprehensive insurance. I go though a specialist insurer (as I'm sure you guys do too). As I said, I get both cars and content insurance from the same mob, and it's around the $1000 AUD mark. Back when I had just the Camry (and no content insurance), it was more like $1700 a year. And if I had to cover a young driver, depending on the vehicle, it's somewhere around the $2000 to $4000 mark.

We don't get the choice to insure a vehicle for a few months. You ever just leave it on 3rd party (and that's compulsory) and nothing else, or you pay for comprehensive. In both instances, you're paying for a full year.

Don't worry, they get us in other areas too. Here in NSW, you can pay over $400 just for a personalized number plate. Again, that's only for 12 months. In other states, it's a one time fee of $150.

We've got a nasty law they're trying to bring in, which will, if the bring it into effect will force a large number of modified cars (especially kit based cars...) off the road or face an even more steeper hill to climb just to get your car legal.

    haha, I paid £2000 for a 1.3 nissan micra when i was 18, 2 years ago.
A friend pays just over £5000 a year for a 1.6 turbo seat leon.
Its crippling, Im only on £5.93 an hour!
BTW they have now upped the female insurance to the same as male, EU sex discrimination laws wghich seems fair, but i can almost guarrantee they will not drop the male insurance quotes, it will just turn further profit.
And to put the cherry on the top, they now fear petrol will rise to £2.00 a litre due to crisis in middle east, thats about $15 a gallon, last time I was in states it was $3.33 a gallon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I suppose it just goes to show that for whatever reason, throughout the world, the people in charge just don't want the rest of us to enjoy ourselves, they just want us to work, pay taxes, get fined for trying to enjoy ourselves, die and then after death pay more taxes.
    I need a few beers.

A friend of mine is currently in Saudi and fills his car up with premium fuel and it comes to LESS than £3 a tank full. Petrol is cheaper than water over there.

The opinions expressed in my posts may not be made in a sound mind and should be taken in the spirit intended, Jack Daniels is fine. Autism isn't something you get or can be 'cured of', it is the way we are wired, differently.
