    Gearbox reverse switch

    Guys,
Should I have a reverse light switch on my gearbox?
I've looked this afternoon and either I'm blind or there isn't one

It's really well hidden down on the drivers side front end of the gearbox close to where the gear-change shaft enters it, there will be a blanking nut blocking it off if one hasn't been fitted before. If it's anything like mine, the access is miserable, but might be easier with your 'slightly' modified shell

    switch

With all your doing, fitting a reverse light switch you should be able to do in your sleep, basic circuit through fuse across switch back to supply.

That's all I did... The switch units are cheap which is a nice change! - I think I did mine back in 2005 when I fitted the reversing camera. I have seen a few gearboxes with no tapping for the switch so fingers crossed yours isn't one of those!

As I understand it, the earlier Bugs didn't have any reverse lights at all. I think it became standard on Bugs around 1967, however I think they didn't make it onto Australian Bugs until the Superbug in 1973! Mine is a 1970, and I'm not required to have reverse lights, as they weren't a standard fitting at the time of manufacture. But I just had one installed (just asked for the wiring, not an actual light), as I'm eventually going to fit a more modern rear light, and the reverse light will then need to be functional.

It does not have to be automatic on reverse selection, you can have a manual switch like many early cars with bolt on reversing lights. You can also fit a micro switch next to the gear lever.
You can drop drop the front of the box and drill and tap for one though.

Had a look but couldn't get under enough to get to the point where the switch would be, still on the to do list but with so many other bits to do at the moment it's fell down the list a little
