    Handbrake cable adjustment

    Hi all,
Has anyone ever done anything about the handbrake adjustment cables inside the car?
On my handbrake the ends of the cables stick out far enough to be uncomfortable when taking the handbrake off, was thinking of covering the ends with something like a domed nut however not sure they make one tall enough.

Anyone had any other ideas or just live with it?

Also, my handbrake can be a pig to get off, is it difficult to change the handbrake mechanism inside the car?

    Thanks in advance!

It's mostly a measure of where we're forced to operate it from: along side the lever rather than above it so no mechanical advantage.....Is the ratchet mechanism in need of some WD-TLC? As for the ends, standard domed nut trapping a spacer-tube perhaps?
It's a 50 year old car and everything works, just not always at the same time.......and it's probably about to get jealous!

Changing the std' VW handbrake lever is a doodle. just remove the pivot, the bracket is welded onto the tunnel.. The cables shouldn't stick up very far at all and it should all be covered by a rubber boot anyway. Usual adjustment is three clicks from full down to brake on, any more and you need to look at the set-up in the drum, like adjustment through the bottom of the back plate, (remove rubber bung), always slacken off the cables fully, then adjust brake shoes, then readjust the cables.

It's mainly the button, difficult to press to get the handbrake off, doesn't seem to be much of a button if that makes sense, once you have it pressed properly the handbrake will release but it's getting it to that point.

Will have to get some m6 (I think) dome nuts and see if they will fit the cable ends. There is a rubber boot but there are also two small holes where they poke through!

Unscrew the button until it is easier to get to release point.

If the handbrake is difficult to release it often helps to press hard on the foot brake while releasing the handbrake.

Pull up when pressing the button helps.
probably worn ratchet (that's bigger than a mousechet ) pawl and going over the pivot point on the quadrant so a rebuild or replacement is needed, good idea anyway with a chassis that age.

VW Heritage have replacements at about 25 quid but cheaper is a chrome one on Ebay
