Thread: Because I'm stupid

    Because I'm stupid

My daily has failed it's MOT, and it was only a £250 Xsara Picasso anyway, so I've been looking around to see whether I repair (£460) or replace...

    I am seriously tempted!
    I know I shouldn't be!
    I know I'm stupid!
    I know it'd be a major mistake!

    I still want to though....

Not the prettiest Loti (and the price has always reflected their lack of desireability) - probably a lot more fun than a Citroen though....
It's a 52 year old car and everything works, just not always at the same time.......and it's probably about to get jealous!

It makes perfect sense. It would be an investment. Classic car prices are going through the roof just now and that Lotus is a steal at that price. (At least that's what you could tell the missus)....

    Not the prettiest, lol!
It's butt ugly, but that's part of the attraction for some weird reason!

Would help if the lights went down I guess, although they are probably permanently up for a reason lol!

It's all out of proportion in the rear quarter too.

I still want it, but common sense has won out in the end...

Desirable classic prices might be lol, but a sympathetically restored, mint Eclat would only make £5-6k, and it'd take 10x that to make it nice!

I think it is quite attractive, but then I liked the Elite!

Apart from the obvious engine reliability issues, the only other major problem with these cars (if they share the same running gear as the Elite, which I believe they do) is the rear brakes - inboard drums, no less. An absolute pig to adjust, and a complete b*stard to replace!

Lights are up due a vacuum leak in the actuator - should snap shut as soon as you start the engine

I'm not going to buy it - but there was a serious risk I would yesterday!

It does have the in-board drums.

Squinting at the (probably strategically) blurry list of advisories on the MOT, it needs the off-side front suspension rebuilding really, and the front brake lines replacing. The later wouldn't be an issue, but the former likely presents a parts availability issue at the very least!

I still want it though - need to stop looking at it as the styling is growing on me too

I like it too, and those rear seats would be inspiration for seat layout in a Nova.
Classic cars are only worth what you can get for them, I have two, both 1987 my second string is a BMW E30 320i auto and one I 'gave away' is a Mercedes Cosworth 2.3 16V.
