Thread: Madscientist's Nova project

Well, some good news and some bad news.....First the good news.

Nice sunny day in Yorkshire today, managed some garage time at last, and decided to dismantle the engine.
Removal of ancillaries went well, as did removal of cylinder head.

    Then came the bad news

One cylinder was almost full with Rusty water!
Although after a clean, the cylinders look slightly better, the pitting due to corrosion is all too clear...

    The valves have also suffered..

And again, although not as bad following a brief clean, corrosion of the valves is still evident

So, plan going forward is certainly a rebore/oversize pistons, and probably new valves. I'm hoping that the remainder of the cylinder head (valve guides and, in particular, camshafts) are ok.

    Cheers,

    Colin

    Colin,

To get the photos to load automatically using photobucket, you copy the contents last box "IMG" and paste that onto your post. That way it will display automatically.

Many thanks David- images now fixed (I managed to do this ok with my earlier postings done using a laptop but then let photy-buchett app get the better of me on my tablet!!)

    Cheers

By way of update, not surprisingly given the state of the cylinders, I was initially unable to hand-rotate the engine via a socket on the crank-pulley bolt. However, after introducing some diesel fuel into each cylinder and allowing so sit overnight, some gentle pressure on the crank pulley nut freed up the pistons- good news as I was fearing a hard time actually removing the pistons- from the block when I dismantle prior to honing. Another little win!

    Cheers,

    Colin

The engine does look a bit sorry for its self given the amount of corrosion you have to wonder about the oil and water ways being furred up with corrosion as well. Would some sort of chemical dip clear rust deposits from them? might be worth finding out before you spend lots of money on it.

It reminds me of when I started on my car and took the heads off the old engine. It looked exactly the same.
Keep the faith. It will be worth it .

You would think that an engine, enclosed from the element's and filled with oil would be in better condition? Sadly I think my own cars engine (which is VW Beetle based) will be somewhat similar when I get around to stripping it down given that it only has 30 psi on three cylinders and 0 psi on the fourth?

My old Capri (which stood unused for 12 years)- fired up and ran perfectly after years of standing idle. What causes some engine internals to decay and others not?

    Dear all,

Many thanks- as always- for your suggestions and kind words of encouragement.

Dirk- re: possible blocked water/oil passages- yes, good points.

I was somewhat surprised that for the waterways at least (at least the ones that I could see between cylinder head and block and following removal of water pump), there did not appear to be any gunk.

However, I plan to contact an engine specialist to give the block the full once over including pricing up a thorough clean as well as ensuring that it is basically sound, no cracks etc. If all looks OK, then also to include rebore and also fitting of new pistons/rings/shell bearings...

    Cheers,

    Colin

All the best for the engine rebuild. I had a similar but not quite so bad experience on my VW engine after 2 years in the open and rain down the air filters although how the hell it got into the cylinders I don't know as I have 40mm trumpets on the carbs as well as the air filter with an alloy top cover.
Sure all will be super in the end and nature probably forcing you to do what you should do anyway.

Reminds me of when I looked at the original engine in mine...
    Keep the faith
