The handbrake cable is thick, springy and generally uncooperative, the best 'route' appears to be drilling 2 holes to make a tunnel under the Bumpstop mount and routing it through there, I'd need a >16mm hole to do this, it seems drastic.
    Any thoughts?

I have looked to see if I have a photo of mine but I can not find one, but I am sure I just forced it in front of the bump stop and It works fine, Ill have a look tomorrow and take a photo. I have also noticed on mine that the caliper bracket is not a true 90 deg to the disk as a result the inner pad only makes contact over about 50% of its size. Once you get your brakes sorted it will be worth putting a feeler gauge in between the pads and disk and see if there is any variation along the pad.

    So much for a 'bolt-on' kit :-(
Things go sideways all the time, at least we can look into potential solutions before they become a problem

I'm assuming these kits are based on the standard beetle handbrake position, so does that mean you have to have the cables shortened? The reason I ask is I have a set of that brake kit sitting on boxes waiting to be fitted, didn't get around to it last year

Yes the inner needs to be shortened I just use one of these kits.

It has worked on the drum brakes and is working on the new disks.

Pretty sure that handbrake cable adjusters (similar to those in the above link) are included in the EMPI kit - I'll check.
Maybe the later kits had these included?

Steve have you got bigger than standard disks on? that would move your caliper position? I think rather than drill a hole in the bump stop mount it would be better to have a custom cable made. The guys that advertise in CKC ( I can not remember their name) would be able to do it.
