Thread: Rear axles and hub bearings

My understanding is that if the seams are horizontal (9 oclock or 3 oclock) they are under the least stress as the axle tubes move up and down whereas At 12 oclock the seams are under maximum stress when the tubes pivot. However if the boots were going to leak, the oil would be least likely to escape when the seam was vertical (12 oclock) but would allow more oil to leak if Horizontal (9 or 3 oclock). Therefore 10 or 2 oclock is the best compromise solution. I did the same as you and fitted mine at 10 oclock facing forward

Thanks Phil, I had wondered if there was any difference between 2 and 10, and opted for the one that seemed easiest! `¬)

Thanks Peter; I actually have a printout of that pic from before when trying to decide if to go the hydraulic clutch route... I should have noticed the boot! (looks good in red!)

Is there a trick to getting the boots to meet up where the jubilee clips go; we struggled to get them together at those points and I'm still not convinced they are properly 'together'. They are ok where the bolts go, but the jubilee ends are debatable... If squeezing the main part I can hear air coming out where the ends meet under the jubilee clip - they seem very tight to the axle tube and the jubilee clips aren't over tightened?

I used a pair of circlip pliers (forceps) to pull the ends tight as I did up the clip. Best done with two people but one can do it, just a but of a juggle.
