Shed time has been very limited over the past 4 weeks, as the wife broke her wrist in 3 places. So I have had to do the boring things like the garden and cutting the lawn. She has been told in no uncertain terms not to do it again

Anyway I have managed a few hours and have now finished the main part of the first die. This is the smallest one I need 15mm for the heater pipes.

Still got one last bit to make but that should be easier. Hopefully it will be raining over the weekend and I have an excuse not to cut the lawnand get some shed time.

That's a hefty old slab of metal. How did you make the recess?

I recall seeing someone on youtube use a mill with a rotating platform to cut something with a recess in it. I would assume Dirk did the same.

The platform was like a lathe chuck and he could set it at any angle he chose... he could then rotate the "chuck" to cut as he wished, even while milling he used it to mill his own disc brakes and more.

It could be done in a mill, but my rotary table is too big at 10 inch to put vertically in the mill, I have 10 inch movement in the knee but then there is no room for tooling.

I finally managed to finish making the second part of the die tonight.

Even though it was a bit late and the base unit still isn't bolted to the floor I had to have a quick go, I was a bit apprehensive as a lot of what I have read about bending aluminium has said it need to be tempered. But it turned out perfect with no noticeable deformities I'm well chuffed.

Need to do the inch and a half die now.

    Dirk
