Does anyone know if the gearbox fitted would differ between engines?
Example my current aircooled is a 1641, if I was to replace this with a 1200 or 1300 would it bolt straight to the same gearbox?

Yes, I have a 1302 IRS box converted to swing axle on a 1600. (I should really have converted the chassis to IRS at that time, idiot!)
The main difference is the clutch, Starter ring (6V or 12V), release bearing and guide tube but the flanges are all the same from 1200 to 2Ltr wasserboxer.

The previous owner of my long deceased VW bug had installed a 1200cc engine and I swapped that out with a 1600.
So, as far as I know, they should be interchangeable without issue

The only issue is putting a 12v engine on a 6v box as Peter mentioned it will still fit if you use a burr to clear the flywheel, the main final drive ratio's used are 4.3,4.1 & 3.8
